Preparing for School

By Ms. Joy Nehr

School’s Out For Summer….School’s Out…Oh, Wait, It’s Almost Time to Start Again

It’s that time of year where anxious students and, believe it or not, equally anxious teachers look at the calendar with a sense of trepidation and foreboding…the end of summer is looming and the start of school is closer than you realized. But, there’s really no need to fear the year. This is the start of a brand new school year and a whole new opportunity for you.

Rather than focusing on what may seem like the end of your freedom, look at the positives. Make a list of the things you can look forward to:

  • Clubs starting up- maybe you’ll try a new club this year, or maybe you’ll even start your own;
  • New teachers to meet- you never know when you’re going to find that teacher who will turn into a lifelong friend, or that teacher who you know will always help you with any subject, even if it’s not something they teach;
  • New courses- this could be the year you find your favorite subject(s), or this could even be the year when you turn a corner and really earn some good grades

This is the point in the year where you should set some new goals for yourself and even plan out some rewards as well. If school hasn’t been your “thang,” maybe this is the year to change that thought process and become an expert student. Make sure you’re setting realistic goals for yourself, though. For example, if PE isn’t really your “cup of tea,” setting out to become Duane Johnson’s body-double probably isn’t a realistic goal, but setting the goal of going to the gym three times a week to lift weights, would be a realistic goal.

Think about the other positives about school starting, especially an online school. You don’t have to worry if you’ll show up on the first day of school in the “wrong” outfit. You don’t have to worry about getting your backpack tossed into the garbage cans. You may not even have to change your sleep habits like your friends who have to report to an actual building every day at a time that is designated by some school board. In fact, you can even “do school” in bed.

Hey, maybe this start of school really isn’t so bad after all. It’s all in your perspective.
